A 90-Day SEO Plan for a South African Small Business

A prioritised 90-day plan focused on crawlability, customer intent, helpful content and measurable search growth.

· SEO

A sensible SEO plan for a South African small business should make your site easier to find and easier to use. It should not begin with a demand for hundreds of exact-match links or twenty pages that repeat the same sales pitch. Start by learning which services your customers search for, which pages already perform and which technical problems prevent useful pages from being discovered.

This roadmap is designed for a small team with limited time. The ninety days describe what to do, not a promise that rankings will arrive by a deadline.

Days 1–15: Establish a reliable baseline

Connect Google Search Console and a suitable analytics platform. Record clicks, impressions, top landing pages, search queries and enquiries before making changes. Check whether the website is crawlable, whether the important pages are indexed and whether an XML sitemap is available.

For a business with a physical location, review your Google Business Profile, including business name, category, address or service area, telephone and opening information. Only represent locations where the business genuinely operates.

Take an inventory of existing URLs. If you are redesigning the site, preserve pages that earn relevant traffic or plan thoughtful redirects. Create a simple worksheet for every primary service: current URL, target customer, search intent and next action.

Days 16–30: Fix the pages that should generate enquiries

Choose three to five commercial pages with the greatest business value. For example: website design, WordPress development, SEO services, Google Ads management and website maintenance. Give each a distinct purpose, strong introduction, clear examples of deliverables, and an obvious enquiry route.

A title such as “Website Design for Durban Businesses | EVO” communicates a location and service. It is more useful than a title packed with every South African city and multiple repetitive synonyms. The content must substantiate the location claim with relevant details.

Add internal links between related services and educational articles. Review headings, alt text, canonical URLs, mobile usability and form delivery. Fixing existing high-intent pages often matters more than immediately producing new pages.

Days 31–60: Publish content that answers real questions

Interview salespeople and customers to find recurring objections. Topics might include what website quotes should contain, when to use WordPress, how to compare SEO proposals, and which analytics events matter for lead generation. Write one useful article per question and connect it to a service page that naturally helps with the next step.

Each article should explain a decision, provide a checklist or show an example. Include trustworthy sources when making technical or regulatory claims. Google recommends helpful, people-first content, rather than writing material solely to manipulate rankings.

Avoid thin location pages that swap “Durban” for “Pretoria” without adding value. Add genuine location-specific information only where you can demonstrate relevant services, projects or local expertise.

Days 61–90: Measure, improve and earn mentions

Review Search Console pages and queries. Are impressions improving for a useful page but click-through low? Improve its title and description based on what the page actually offers. Are visitors reaching a landing page but not enquiring? Test the copy, form length, proof and calls to action.

Begin relevant outreach: professional associations, local business directories, supplier case studies, partner pages and helpful editorial contributions. Quality links are editorial decisions by other sites. Paying for followed links or automated bulk submissions carries search-spam risk.

Keep a weekly SEO scorecard

Metric Why it helps
Qualified organic enquiries Connects search work with business outcomes
Non-branded search clicks Shows discovery beyond people already knowing your name
Indexed high-value pages Confirms core pages are available in search
Useful keyword queries Reveals questions customers actually ask
Conversion rate by page Highlights weak pages even when traffic rises
Search Console technical issues Catches indexing and usability problems

Do not treat a plugin’s “100/100 SEO score” as a Google ranking forecast. It can be a useful editorial checklist but cannot measure search competition or trust.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does SEO work in South Africa?

Timelines vary by market, existing website condition, competition, content and search-engine crawling. Measure progress over time rather than relying on a guaranteed ranking date.

Is Google Ads a replacement for SEO?

No. Ads can generate visibility while a campaign runs; organic SEO builds useful pages that can attract relevant search traffic without a per-click media charge. Many businesses use both strategically.
